THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU VILLAGE INC.

Ubuntu is a south african term meaning "humanity to others" & UNDER THE RADAR is the first seed planted by Ubuntu Village in a effort to strengthen and uplift the human family.

UNDER THE RADAR newsletter specifically targets non-profit and grass roots organizations that serve the African-American community and in addition, have a governing board or staff of at least 50% African Americans. The intention of this newsletter is to inspire, educate & unify a community that has been historically under-represented in both for-profit & non-profit ventures.

National Black LUV festival Celebrates 10 YEARS!
10th Annual BLACK LUV FESTIVAL SEPT 16th @ 12 PM

4th & Pennsylvania Ave, NW Washington DC

BE THERE!
b luv fest

In 1997, The Black L.U.V. (love, unity & vision) Festival was established by artists in the historic U street community who continue to be dedicated to social change. This FREE one-day multi-cultural outdoor event, dedicated to upliftment, has used the cultural arts as a vehicle to inform and enlighten communities of the Nation's Capital. The Black L.U.V. (love, unity & vision) Festival informs and enlightens communities on social injustice, gentrification, healthcare and educational issues that disproportionately affect poor people in general and black people in particular in our communities and neighborhoods.

Over 13 musicians, 6 poets, and 6 community activist grace the main stage along with food vendors and community organizations on this spectacular day of unity. For the past 6 years national featured artists have included: Black Sheep, Yahzarah, Fertile Ground, and Urban Ave 31 featuring Jive Recording Artist Raheem DeVaughn. Several institutions and social organizations commit to the L.U.V. festival's message of upliftment, empowerment and world community awareness and outreach: Max Robinson Aids Clinic/Whitman Walker, Us Helping Us, American Diabetes Association, Ummah Endowment Fund, Black Men Coalition, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, Criminal Justice Policy Foundation, Cease Fire Don't Smoke the Brothers, Men on the Move, and Common Sense for Drug Policy.

Follow the Leader
Are you a Leader?
by Candace J. Mickens
leadership

Lately, I have been dealing with the concept of Leadership. I mean when I was young or shall I say youngER ,we played the game "Follow the Leader" or Simon Says". Forgive me for bashing Simon but who was he and why was he so great that we had to do what he said? What made him such a great LEADER? Was it because he had mind control over thousands of followers?

Every day I am confronted with the issue of Leadership. From Bush to Clinton to Obama to Michael Vick, my mind struggles to grasp the concept of GOOD leadership and the necessity of Leadership. Can anyone be a leader? Should everyone play a leadership role? Do we even need leaders? From Chiefs to Presidents to Executive Directors to Fathers its clear that leaders exists in our society. Do we need them? How does someone become a leader? How do we get rid of a leader? IMPEACHMENT (oops that slipped, stay focused..). Can you have leaders without followers? How can we hold leaders Accountable? Do good leaders make good followers?

I could go on and on with my musings about leaders but if you stayed with me this long I better be grateful and get to the point. The point is there are alot of questions when it comes to leadership. I would venture to say there are probably more questions than answers and I think that has our families & communities and therefore our organizations & businesses divided and confused. We need to take the steps first within ourselves and then expand outward on this concept of leadership and build some positive energy surrounding the issue. Starting Now. Are you a leader?

STAY TUNED FOR THE "UNDER THE RADAR" SEMINAR & WEBINAR SERIES COMING IN THE FALL. We will need your help to spread the word.
